Custom Orthotics in Sydney
Our Sydney Custom Orthotics Guarantee
What are orthotics?
Orthotics (Functional Foot Orthoses) are inserts that can be put into your shoes to improve function and reduce pain in your feet. Structures of your foot and leg that are subject to excessive forces during walking, running or other physical activity can be offloaded using this device. Our podiatrist can custom design orthotics in Sydney to fit in your casual shoes, sports shoes and fashion shoes.
You will require a biomechanical assessment to order a pair of orthotics. This will ensure that you will have a device that is suitable for your feet and helps to improve your foot function.
All our orthotics are 3D printed. We offer orthotics that can either be plain and simple with a selection of coloured covers or you can get a fun coloured 3D printed orthotic with a design or image you want to be printed on it.
There are three main types of orthotics that we offer:
Custom-made orthotics - these are manufactured using a scan or mold of your foot. These are designed for your specific needs and are made for optimal fit and comfort. This is the most popular type of orthotic because it is customised.
Custom Feet insoles - these are molded to the shape of your foot during your appointment. You can walk out with your orthotics. They are suitable for arch support and rearfoot correction, but you may require customised orthotics which are designed in a lab to offload particular structures of the foot depending on your condition. These orthotics may be available as gap-free orthotics if covered by your health fund.
Prefabricated orthotics - these are off the shelf, cost-effective, and designed according to average fit. These can be adjusted, however, they are not custom-made. They do provide adequate support for your feet in some cases and your podiatrist will advise you if this is the best option.
Do I need orthotics?
Custom orthotics are always part of an overall treatment plan which may include exercises. Custom orthotics in our Sydney podiatry clinic are used to treat pain or correct foot position/alignment in the lower limb.
Orthotic treatment can be useful for:
Reducing pain
Improving foot function
Encouraging mobility in particular joints
Correcting foot deformities
Providing support if the ankle is hyper-flexible
Reducing the risk of injury reoccurring
How does my podiatrist diagnose a problem and know if I need orthotics?
Our Sydney podiatrist can diagnose and treat conditions of the feet if you are experiencing foot, ankle, or knee pain. The podiatrist will ask you questions about your pain, when you first noticed the symptoms and when they are better or worse.
The podiatrist can perform a biomechanical assessment and gait analysis to see the cause of your pain and this will aid in determining which type of orthotics is suitable.
The podiatrist may also examine your feet and feel the painful spot to see if a particular area is painful.
The podiatrist may also request imaging such as X-ray, CT scan, MRI, or ultrasound. This may help in determining the cause of the pain, however, is not necessary most of the time.
Once the diagnosis is determined, your podiatrist will consider whether orthotics and other treatment options are right for you.
What conditions are orthotics used to treat?
Arthritis - rheumatoid and osteoarthritis
Knee pain
Bunions
Bursitis
Diabetes
Flat feet
Hammer toes
High arches
Injuries
Plantar fasciitis/ fasciopathy
Heel spurs
Tendinopathies - peroneal tendinopathy, peroneal tendinitis, Achilles tendinopathy, Achilles tendinitis
And more….any foot-related concern or pain if your podiatrist determines orthotics are suitable.
How can orthotics help?
Orthotics are only one part of the treatment, it’s really important to be wearing suitable footwear as custom orthotics require suitable shoes. It is important to do exercises as part of a treatment protocol.
Custom orthotics in our Sydney clinic may not help everyone and you must discuss this with your podiatrist.
