What are thick toenails?

Toenails can look thick in some people, the nail may be brown or yellow and may have lines through it or even look claw-like. This is known as Onychogryphosis or Ram’s Horn Nail.

This may cause pain and irritation when wearing some shoes due to increased pressure on the area. If left untreated, it can cause the nail to damage the surrounding skin and toes and may lead to infection.

What caused thick toenails?

  • Damage caused by kicking your toe against something or trauma like dropping something on your toe

  • Not cutting toenails for a long time

  • Wearing shoes that are too tight

  • Foot deformity (such as bunions or clawed toes)

  • Diabetes

  • Poor blood circulation

  • Fungal nails

  • Poor diet
