Most of us enjoy a wonderful pedicure at a spa or salon, but do you know that there is an increased risk of fungal skin and nail infections and a risk of exposure to warts? That is why at Bondi Podiatry we offer medical pedicures by a university qualified and trained podiatrist in a safe and clean environment with sterile tools and equipment. There are many benefits to this service and this treatment can address a variety of foot-related problems.

What is a medical pedicure exactly? A medi-pedi is a pedicure performed by a qualified podiatrist who are knowledgeable about feet. It involves shaping the nails, cleaning nail beds, removing and smoothing corns and callus, removing corns, treating warts and fungal infections. We also finish the treatment with moisturising and a relaxing gentle foot massage. We also offer polish for those who would otherwise go to a nail salon, having polish applied at Bondi Podiatry significantly reduces the risk of infection as we only use single-use brushes and containers and no polish is shared between patients.

During the consultation, we can also discuss how a podiatrist may be able to help you if you have foot pain or a biomechanical problem that you would like to resolve.

What are the steps involved with a medical pedicure?

  1. The podiatrist will thoroughly examine your feet and may be able to detect fungal infections, warts, corns, and calluses during this assessment. Your podiatrist will ask you about your foot health and other relevant medical conditions which may affect your feet.

  2. Your podiatrist will cleanse your feet with a spray, this is to reduce the risk of infection as spa baths in salons can be a source of bacteria and fungus.

  3. Using specialised clippers, your podiatrist will cut across each toenail, this is to reduce the risk of ingrown toenails in the long term and will smooth the edges.

  4. Your podiatrist will file your nails and clean around your nails.

  5. Corns and callus will be removed with a scalpel and/or with burrs.

  6. We offer polish at an additional cost if you would like this treatment, we use single use brushes and pots so that there is a reduced risk of infection. Unlike salons which may share tools and polish between clients which increases the risk of fungal infections and warts.

  7. We then cleanse your feet and give you pampering moisturiser and a gentle relaxing foot massage.

  8. Enjoy your beautiful refreshed feet!

What Are The Health Benefits Of A Medical Pedicure?

Medical pedicures are a relaxing way to treat your feet and keep them clean and fresh, there are many benefits which can include:

  • Prevent ingrown toenails - Ingrown toenails can be painful, cause swelling, and even lead to an infection if left untreated

  • Can manage cracked or split toenails

  • Remove corns and callus (hard skin)

  • Clean feet and reduce flaking and dry skin

  • Reduce foot odour

  • If you have diabetes or other medical condition which may affect your feet, its a great time to review the risks and how to manage them. We can also perform a diabetes foot assessment.

  • Detect foot problems such as warts (verruca pedis) and fungal infections

  • Opportunity to ask questions about other foot problems

  • More hygienic than a cosmetic procedure in a salon due to strict infection control protocol and sterilisation techniques. No tools, polish or brushes are shared between clients.
