Tinea pedis or Athlete’s Foot refers to fungal infections of the skin which are caused by different types of fungus. It can affect the skin and affect the nails (onychomycosis - fungal nail infection). This type of infection is common between the toes and on the soles of the feet.

What are the symptoms of fungal skin infections?

Symptoms may include:

  • Flaky peeling skin that may crack. If the skin is broken, it may allow other infections to enter the skin.

What causes fungal skin infections?

Fungal infections flourish in warm, moist, and dark environments. This is why fungal infections are common in areas of the foot, particularly between the toes.

The fungus may be present on our skin already or can be picked up from shared bathrooms, showers, towels, changing rooms, and swimming pools. Socks should be changed daily as socks that retain moisture may allow the fungus to flourish.

If the fungal infection is present and you have a crack in the skin, the fungus may enter the body.

How can I prevent and treat fungal skin infections?

You can use topical anti-fungal creams, sprays, powder, and gels without a prescription from the chemist. Ask your podiatrist and pharmacist which one would be suitable.

If the fungal infection does not go away with topical treatments, your may need to see your doctor who can prescribe stronger oral or topical medication if suitable.

You should wash your socks, sheets, and towels with an antifungal laundry detergent and spray your shoes with an anti-fungal spray to prevent reinfection.

To keep fungal infections under control:

  • Daily sock changes

  • Wear flip flops or other forms of footwear in shared wet areas

  • Do not walk without shoes or socks on your feet

  • Wash and dry your feet daily (particularly between the toes)
