Choosing the right school shoes in 2022

Kids are heading back to school after a long summer and lockdowns which means that their shoes might need an update, both in size and style.

When choosing the right footwear for your children it is always important to consider the style required by their uniform code as well as the support they need for the activities they will do throughout the day.

At Bondi Podiatry, our podiatrist Zahava Robinson recommends wearing shoes that resemble a supportive runner as much as possible. We recommend the following characteristics:

  • Rearfoot support - the fabric behind the heel should be firm and supportive and should not bend with minimal pressure.

  • Midfoot support - when the shoe is twisted there should be some, but not too much flexibility.

  • Forefoot support - the shoe should bend where the toes bend to allow for the toes to propel your children’s feet forward with ease.

  • Can the shoes accommodate an orthotic if required? Most children do not need orthotics, but if they do then you may require slightly deeper shoes.

Fabric is also an important factor to consider, leather is a great durable breathable fabric and is often chosen for footwear over PU. However, PU has improved over time and should be considered for its ethical benefits as a non-animal product and cost-efficiency. Mesh fabrics are versatile and breathable, however, they are more prone to breakage under impact in the schoolyard and may not be allowed by some uniform codes.

The specific brand of the runner is not as important as the fit, so it is recommended that you get your shoes properly fitted in a shop like Athlete’s Foot or children’s shoe shops. It is important to see a range of footwear to determine which styles and fit are appropriate for you ensuring they are comfortable in the shop. Often school shoes need to be changed every 6 months, so it is important to consider this as part of your budget to ensure that they can be replaced when needed.
